From West with the Night / Beryl Markham

 Markham describes in this passage her time as a pilot assisting with tracking and hunting in East Africa. It felt different from many of the other women's writings in the text because of the use of setting. Their demeanor and time were about the same as Blixen's, but Markham expressed their strength in a different way. showed. From her descriptions of how she flew birds, tracked prey, and rescued hunters, the reader could easily see that she was a very clever and skilled woman. Compared to Karen Blixen, Markham seems to have a more positive, outwardly confident, and courageous personality, just in her lifestyle and career. Towards the end of her segment, Markham states that she has returned to England, but she still appreciates and is proud of her work in East Africa. Her description of her work shows the reader that she lives for adventure and risk."If a violent storm drives me into the bush and sansevieria, that's an opportunity and that's the job" (529). She has fears, but to face them or somehow appreciate them. After readers have fully realized Markham's passion and pride in her work in East Africa, she explains that she has other thoughts and dreams by the end of the section. Perhaps without meaning, Markham has developed a perfect relationship with his readers. Most people are never completely satisfied with what they are doing or where they are. Markham shows us that it is human nature to always look ahead and to have hopes and dreams, no matter how wonderful and beautiful the current situation may be. Readers may find Markham's life to be crazy and different, but they quickly learn that Markham, like everyone else, has different hopes and dreams in a different place.
